Lets Go Solar: Photovoltaic System Setup
SHA (Southern Handicaped Association) is a non-profit organization educating and serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. We encompass beneficiaries of all ages and various diagnoses including autism, Down syndrome, Cerebral palsy, and various other developmental disabilities. We provide several services such as early intervention, education system, paramedical services and home visits programs, training to young adults and job placement.
We are the only school in the south catering for free of costs people with disabilities ranging from 3 months till 30 years. We have around 125 beneficiaries which benefit from our services on regular basis. We possess the only modern occupational therapy room in the south, equipped with interactive board and training unit in jute bags and other products
Founded in 1985, SHA comprises of 2 units (Surinam and Plaine Magnien) and more than 100 beneficiaries. For the past years, it has continued to grow and evolve along with the changing needs and issues people with disabilities which their families face.
One of the goals of SHA is to facilitate the access of educational facilities to people with special needs and to promote equality and equity. We have always believed in our beneficiaries and with time, we have brought forward new services which are accessible to children/young adults. Innovation and bridging the gaps between “typically developing children” and special needs children has always been our main goal. We have always been able to provide free services to everyone as we believe education should be accessible to all.
We are planning to set up " Photovoltaic System" in the school at Surinam. The school through the help of ABSA Bank has set up a modern Aquaponic System. Therefore, to make the school autonomous in the production of Electricity and also to be more eco-friendly we are planning to set up a Photovoltaic System.
A photovoltaic system uses solar radiation to generate a direct current (DC) by means of the photovoltaic effect.
By connecting a set of these photovoltaic modules in series/parallel, a photovoltaic generator is obtained with the desired current and voltage characteristics.
The system should beneft us in several ways:
1. Save significantly on utility costs, putting much needed money back into their budget for more important things
2. Solar energy is considered “clean” and is responsible for little to no pollution when compared to traditional energy sources
3. Setting our school apart as innovators in the renewable energy game by installing a solar photovoltaic system, offers us a competitive edge.
4. Solar panels help ensure our school to have electricity.
5. Idot affords a very real opportunity for the education system to make a positive impact on the environment, while providing its students with a better experience overall.
