The Family Strengthening Programme is an empowerment Programme led by SOS Children’s Villages Mauritius, since 2006. The programme aims to help more than 300 vulnerable families, whose children were ‘at risk of losing parental care’. ’Risk of losing parental’’ care is defined as children who are suffering from severe neglect in terms of a number of their basic rights not being fulfilled.  The target group are from 10 to 15 disadvantaged regions over the island.

The services/activities provided by the Family Strengthening Programme include:

  • Family empowerment for self-reliance of families in properly caring for their children.
  • Counselling and psychosocial support to parents.
  • Referrals of children, young people and parents to other institutions for specialised services (e.g., employment, social services etc.).
  • Access of children and young people to education and training.
  • Employability and life skills training for parents and young people.
  • Early Childhood Care and Education through its Education and Learning Centre located in Curepipe region.
  • Information and awareness campaigns to sensitise families, children and the community on various social issues.

Campaign: Education Bundle- Create a brighter tomorrow

The focus of the campaign is an appeal to the community to support around 100 children and youth of the Family Strengthening Programme in providing them educational support for a year.

SOS Children’s Villages Mauritius proposes you to participate in the contribution of the ‘Educational bundle’, as a gift to vulnerable children of its non-residential programme, living in different pocket of poverty.

Education is the key to reverse the cycle of poverty, with the support of generous donors; we can help to ensure the children academic support for 2021. You can be ‘Hero’ by making a difference in the life of children in need, help them to create a brighter future for them and their families.

Sponsorship plan  1

Support 82 children and youths in their primary/secondary education. This includes:

  • Subsidise/ sponsor after hours educational support to 45 children and adolescents whose educational outcomes are below average level to improve their performance. mainly in Mathematics, English, French.
  • Support remedial education classes for 37 children in primary education as additional support for children lagging behind to reach average level
  • Psychotherapy session for family of youth to enhance motivation and ability for the coaching of their respective youth.

Sponsorship plan 2

  • Help sponsor seven very at-risk young people aged of 3 to 5+ years for their pre- primary education. These include 1 year school fees and pedagogical/developmental activities, including learning through play sessions and outdoor pedagogical activities linked to school curriculum)
  • Support one youth to pursue a University degree
  • Giving the opportunity to two youths to start their vocational courses for 1 year

-Supporting 42 primary students for their school tuitions/remedial classes for one year. This includes also psychological intervention for children who have more difficulties to overcome their important vulnerabilities in their daily direct social surrounding, which impact their studies).

Why supporting this project?

  • With 15 years of experience on the field, the Family strengthening programme team collaborate with different NGOs to avoid duplication of services/support.

Positive impacts recorded throughout the years:

 

  • Families able to live decently due to support provided for house refurbishment and extension.
  • More than 90 per cent of children are attending school
  • Strong educational programmes after school hours with psychosocial assessment to enable children to improve their areas of learning and development
  • More than 60% of children are reaching satisfactory and high educational performance
  • Youth are achieving higher level of education in University or obtaining scholarship abroad to pursue studies
  • Youth are starting small businesses to obtain a decent revenue
  • Participation of Youth in National Youth Parliament
  • Adolescents completing their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award
  • Youth obtaining employment after training
  • Talent Management: Youth involved in National Football League for Juniors and participating in International Competitions in Djibouti
  • 40 % of families are making at least one effort towards self-reliance each year
  • Good Referral system: Families are aware of services provided by other institutions
  • Good level of participation of children, youth and families in activities
  • Low number of Child Protection Cases (less than 1 per cent)
  • Low number of cases of family separation and children being placed in alternative care (less than 1 per cent)
  • Formal partnerships with school to enable children from the community to improve their educational performance
  • Partnerships with other NGOs to empower other families
  • Strong collaboration with Government to sustain efforts in empowerment of the most vulnerable
  • Closure of interventions in communities who have been empowered and have strong social support systems
